Why is a healthy skin barrier important?

The skin barrier is the body's first line of defense, providing round-the-clock protection against internal and external aggressors while supporting a balanced microbiome. By day, it shields the skin from harmful environmental factors and locks in essential moisture to maintain deep hydration. At night, it supports the skin's natural repair processes, helping to repair damage and strengthen resilience. Together, these elements ensure the skin stays balanced, healthy, and resilient.

Why is it important for long-term skin health that the skin barrier and microbiome are in balance?

The skin barrier and the microbiome are deeply interconnected, and this collaboration is vital in maintaining healthy, balanced, and resilient skin. A healthy skin barrier provides a stable environment for the microbiome to thrive, helping to prevent microbiome dysbiosis and ensuring that beneficial microbes can continue to contribute to the skin's regenerative functions. In return, the microbiome reinforces the skin barrier by producing molecules/nutrients that protect against harmful pathogens that can cause irritation and helps maintain the lipid matrix, promoting hydration and preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
